Top Ten Universities in Rwanda

Without further ado, we present to you the list of the top universities in Rwanda.

  1. University of Rwanda

Siting on the number one spot on the list is the University of Rwanda. This institution also happens to be the largest higher education institution in Rwanda and was established in the year 2013 as a merger of previously independent public institutions of higher education with the National University of Rwanda as the largest of them all.

Located in Kigali (Rwanda’s capital), the University of Rwanda is also abbreviated as UR. It has six independent and self-governing colleges which are; College of Art and Social Sciences (CASS), College of Agriculture, Animal Sciences and Veterinary Medicine (CAVM), College of Business and Economics (CBE), College of Education (CE), College of Medicine and Health Sciences (CMHS), College of Science and Technology (CST). The University of Rwanda has fourteen (14) campuses in Gikondo, Remera, Nyarugenge, Huye, Busogo, Nyamishaba, Nyagatere, Rusizi, Kicukiro, Musanze, Rukara, Byumba and Kibungo campuses.

  1. Adventist University of Central Africa

The Adventist University of Central Africa (AUCA) sits at the number two spot as the second-best university in Rwanda. This university is owned by a Seventh-day Adventist Church. known in French as Universite Adventiste d’Afrique Centrale. In 2005, the institution recorded over 4,000 students.

The university was founded in 1978 but was re-established in 1996 due to political unrest. The university has two campuses – Masoro Main Campus and Ngoma Campus School of Nursing.

  1. University of Global Health Equity

The University of Global Health Equity (UGHE), a health sciences university in Rwanda takes over the third position as the third best university in Rwanda. Launched in September 2005, the UGHE is a new kind of university focused on delivering the highest quality of health care by addressing the critical social and systemic forces causing inequities and inefficiencies in health care delivery.

The University of Global Health Equity (UGHE) officially opened its Butaro Academic Campus in 2019 – a six-building campus in Burera District that would help expand the courses offerings over UGH over the next several years. The campus is located 80 miles north of Rwanda’s capital city, Kigali.

  1. Institut d’Enséignement Supérieur de Ruhengeri

Popularly abbreviated as INES-Ruhengeri, the Institut d’Enséignement Supérieur de Ruhengeri was officially opened on the 17th of November, 2003 by the then President of the Republic of Rwanda, HE Paul Kagame, who also laid the stone foundation and launch the construction of the campus on June 30th, 2003. The university has its first graduation ceremony in 2010.

The university has 4 faculties for undergraduate programmes, which are – Faculty of Applied Fundamental Sciences, Faculty of Economics Social Sciences and Management, Faculty of Education, and Faculty of Law.

  1. University of Lay Adventists of Kigali

The University of Lay Adventists of Kigali of Kigali (UNILAK) – a privately owned institution that is operated by the Federation of Adventist Parents Associations for the Development of Education in Rwanda (FAPADER) – which is an association of several lay Seventh-day Adventist proprietorship secondary school associations.

The main campus is located in Kicukiro and Gasobo Districts in Kigali, Rwanda, and has other two satellite campuses located in Nyanza and Rwamagana, Rwanda. Although UNILAK is not a church-owned institution, it is closely aligned with the Seventh-day Adventism Church. The university has four faculties offering both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. They include – Faculty of Law, Faculty of Economic Sciences and Management, Faculty of Environmental Studies, and Faculty of Computing and Information Sciences.

6. University of Tourism Technology and Business Studies

The Rwanda Tourism University College continues to be at the forefront in the Rwandan tourism and hospitality industry as well as Information Technology. UTB is committed to spearhead the advancement of education through quality teaching, learning research, consultancy and service to the community by preparing graduates to meet the needs of Rwanda, the sub region and the global community.

UTB seeks to foster personal and professional growth in a conducive environment that values cultural diversity and cultivates the awareness of ethical issues, gender, fairness, entrepreneurship, competitiveness and social responsibility.

7. University of Kibungo

University of Kibungo is a Community University which was established in 2003 by local community representatives in the Eastern Province after realizing that there was there was shortage of skilled labor in the area of secondary school and agriculture.

8. Christian University of Rwanda

The idea of setting up the Christian University of Rwanda (CHUR), comes from a fair-minded group of former Lecturers in Higher Learning Institutions (HLIs) and some of them continue their up today teaching and research activities.

9.  KIM University

KIM University re-branded (December 2015) from Kigali Institute of Management (KIM) formerly International College of Accountancy and Management (ICAM) is a private institution of Higher Learning offering post-secondary education and training in Business Management and related disciplines in Rwanda. The Institution was registered in 2003 as a non-profit making organization.

The KIM University is located 12 km from the center of Kigali City at Nyandungu on Kigali-Kayonza road.

10. Catholic University of Rwanda

Catholic University of Rwanda is one of many private Christian universities located In Rwanda. The university aspires to be one of the distinguished universities in the country known for providing excellent and quality education resources and training to her students, students from this university are known to be very skilled in practical solutions to problems. The university trains them also to be entrepreneurial, to identify problems in the society, creative innovative solutions to them for profit. Student are exposed to research and development to fuel their innovative culture while they are trained by the university.
